The success of the Lonesome Dove miniseries virtually guaranteed the production of one or more sequels. The first follow-up, Return to Lonesome Dove, was quickly released without author Larry McMurtry's involvement. However, Streets of Laredo, which McMurtry adapted from his own novel, brings us back to his harsh depiction of the American West. The renowned Texas Ranger Captain Woodrow Call (portrayed by James Garner, who confidently steps into the role previously played by Tommy Lee Jones with subtle courage) has transitioned into a bounty hunter. He embarks on a violent pursuit of the ruthless Mexican criminal Joey Garza (Alexis Cruz), an unprincipled and angry rebel from south of the border.

The influence of Lonesome Dove is evident throughout the narrative: Call's former partner Pea Eye Parker (played by Sam Shepard) joins his posse, and Parker's wife, Lorena (portrayed by Sissy Spacek in the role originated by Diane Lane), follows with news that the deranged outlaw Mox Mox (Kevin Conway), who once held her captive, is alive and seeking vengeance. McMurtry's portrayal of the Old West is grim, and Streets of Laredo is not suitable for the easily disheartened. It depicts a lawless, prejudiced, and brutal world where power holds significant influence in remote desert settlements and desolate trails. Despite the tragedy and brutality, McMurtry discovers optimism in the love and understanding that transcends racial divisions, keeps families united, and forges new connections.―Sean Axmaker
